We normally don’t stay until the end of a night game, as they end far past Sullivan’s normal bedtime. But this was the playoffs, and the Seadogs were only down by two runs… They scored one in the ninth inning, but fell short.

Carrying Sullivan out of the stands, a man stopped us, having chased us a ways. He offered the sleepy boy on my shoulders the fouled baseball he’d caught. Sullivan took it and said a quiet thanks.

Sullivan insisted on taking the ball to bed with him, along with his glove, and this is how I found him a short while later. If only that man in the Schilling jersey knew how happy he made Sullivan! Every night since then, our little boy insists on taking both his special baseball and glove to bed. Sometimes he even requests Take Me Out to the Ballpark as his good night song.
